WordPress plugin development

Custom WordPress plugin development services

I build custom WordPress plugins for features your site can't get from an existing plugin: business logic, admin workflows, integrations with other systems and extensions to the plugins you already use. One freelance developer, from specification to delivery.

When a custom plugin is the right choice

  • The feature is specific to your business. Your rules, data or workflow don't exist in any plugin, and forcing a generic plugin to fit would cost more over time.
  • Several plugins are glued together to do one job. One focused plugin is easier to maintain and usually faster than a stack of plugins and workarounds.
  • Important code lives in the theme. Functionality in functions.php disappears when the theme changes. A plugin keeps it independent from the design.
  • WordPress has to exchange data with another system. An API integration, a scheduled import or a webhook needs proper error handling, not a snippet.

And when it isn't: if a maintained plugin already solves the problem, I'll recommend it rather than building a replacement.

Services

What I can build for your WordPress site

  • Custom business functionality

Custom post types, fields and data structures, calculations, rules and front-end features built around how your organisation works.

  • Admin screens & workflows

Settings pages, dashboards, approval steps, user roles and capabilities, so your team can manage the feature without touching code.

  • Extensions to existing plugins

Add-ons that extend a plugin you already rely on through its hooks and APIs, instead of editing its files and losing the changes at the next update.

  • WooCommerce plugin development

Store-specific extensions: pricing, product options, checkout logic and order processing.

    WooCommerce development
  • WordPress API integrations

Connecting WordPress to external services, and exposing WordPress data through the REST API, with background processing for long syncs.

  • Plugin maintenance & fixes

Debugging, updating and extending a custom plugin someone else wrote, including compatibility with newer WordPress and PHP versions.

How the plugins are built

Custom plugins stay on your site for years, so they're written to be secure, predictable and easy for another developer to pick up.

  • WordPress APIs and hooks. Settings, REST, cron and database work go through WordPress's own APIs, so the plugin behaves like the rest of the site.
  • Security. Capability checks, nonces, input sanitisation, output escaping and prepared database queries on every entry point.
  • Performance. Code and assets load only where they're needed, expensive work is cached or moved to the background, and database queries are kept efficient.
  • Compatibility. Tested against the WordPress, PHP and plugin versions your site runs, with clear minimum requirements.
  • Clean install and uninstall. The plugin creates what it needs on activation and removes its data on uninstall if you want it to.
  • Translation-ready and documented. Text can be translated, and the plugin comes with notes on configuration and on how the code is organised.

What you receive

A standalone plugin with its full source code, installed and tested on your site, plus short documentation covering configuration and how the code is organised. The plugin doesn't depend on your theme, so a redesign won't remove the functionality.

For online stores, the same approach applies to WooCommerce extensions. See freelance WooCommerce development for store-specific work such as checkout changes and order integrations.

Process

How a plugin project works

  1. Specification

We define what the plugin must do, who uses it, which data it touches and how it fits the existing site.

  2. Approach & quote

You receive the technical approach (new plugin, add-on or change to existing code), a timeline and a quote.

  3. Development

The plugin is built in a Git repository and tested on a staging copy of your site.

  4. Testing

Functional testing of each use case and admin screen, plus checks with your theme and the other active plugins.

  5. Delivery & support

Installation on the live site, documentation, and maintenance or new features afterwards if you need them.

FAQ

Custom plugin development questions

Answers to common questions about building, extending and maintaining custom WordPress plugins, including ownership, performance and working with existing code.

Should I use an existing plugin or a custom one?

If a well-maintained plugin already does what you need, use it. Custom development makes sense when the requirement is specific to your business, when existing plugins only cover part of it, or when the workaround is becoming harder to maintain than a dedicated plugin.

Can you modify a plugin I already use?

I avoid editing another plugin's files, because the next update overwrites the changes. The usual approach is a small add-on that uses the plugin's hooks. If that isn't possible, I'll explain the trade-offs before doing anything else.

Will a custom plugin slow down my site?

It shouldn't. The plugin only loads its code and assets where they're used, and heavy tasks such as imports or API syncs run in the background. If your site is already slow, I can look at that separately.

Who owns the plugin code?

The code is delivered to you with the plugin. Ownership and usage terms are agreed in writing before the project starts.

Can you take over a custom plugin built by someone else?

Yes. I review the code first, then tell you what state it's in and what it would take to fix or extend it.

How much does custom plugin development cost?

It depends on the scope, so there is no fixed price. Describe what the plugin should do and I'll send a quote for that specific work.

Have a feature your WordPress site can't do yet?

Describe what the plugin should do and who will use it. I'll reply with questions or a first estimate.
